Readers' Mail: Medicare Covers Inhalation Therapy Drugs

Certain inhalation therapy drugs are covered under Medicare B when it is necessary that the drug be taken through a piece of durable medical equipment (DME). This is an important distinction. DME is covered under Medicare Part B. It includes coverage for orthotics and prosthetics, as well as some of the supplies used with durable medical equipment such as blood glucose test strips and the drugs used in nebulizers.

There are only four DME Regional Carriers in the country that process claims for DME. Your permanent address determines which office to contact (see chart below). If you have a question regarding a specific policy or item such as nebulizer drugs or diabetes testing supplies please contact the customer service department of the Medicare office according to the state in which you reside.

Editor's further note: To get more information about inhalation therapy drugs used in nebulizers, you should not need the supplier manual. Contact the office listed for the state in which you live and ask to speak to a customer service representative.
