Social Security & Medicare Questions

Q: My mother requires the services of a home health care agency. We've been told that Medicare will cover the cost of special equipment. Could you give us more detail?

A: Many home health agencies will help you determine the type of durable medical equipment you will need for home health care. First make sure that it is medically necessary and that your mother's doctor has prescribed it. Medicare pays 80% of the cost and you pay 20%. When ordering medical equipment, make sure there is a way for you to terminate the rental or return the item if it turns out not to be covered by Medicare and you decide you can't afford it. Otherwise you may get stuck with a large expense.
