TSCL Member Remembers

In 1943 a bright, handsome and talented 18-year old boy signed up for military service. By 19, he was a trained, but untested soldier on his way to Europe. On September 17, 1944 he parachuted into Holland. He marched, fought, starved, marched some more, and nearly froze at Bastogne. Having become a crack shot, he positioned himself on a rise in Belgium; and with two wounded GIs handing him reloaded rifles he took out a German patrol, one by one. After it was over, he went to check: 30 dead Germans, many old men, but mostly boys, 13 and 14 year olds who had not yet started to shave.

The young man who returned home kept it locked up for decades, but once, shortly before his own death, while speaking to his son, he recounted the event. Fifty-some years after the fact, he wept.

Think of those young men who didn't return. Think of those who returned broken and still in VA hospitals across this country after 55 years; their lives a shambles.

A World War II Memorial to these fighters who saw and endured untold horrors is long, long overdue. We owe them.

Help Remember Those Who Fought

Construction has begun on the World War II Memorial. It will not be completed without your help, because it is not funded with any taxpayer dollars but strictly through private donations. TSCL has raised more than $40,000 to-date. If each TSCL member donates just $1.00 we will raise $1.5 million for the memorial.
