Is The New Medicare Prescription Discount Card The Right Choice For You?

By Garlette Dunkley, TSCL Member Benefits Coordinator

A Medicare-approved prescription discount card may save you money on your prescriptions, but it’s a good idea to compare your savings before you enroll.  The new Medicare-approved cards may have an annual enrollment fee as high as $30.  The government expects savings with the new prescription drug cards to average 10%-25%, but you might not save anything at all.

Please keep in mind that enrollment in the Medicare-approved prescription drug discount card program is not mandatory.  However, if you do choose to enroll, the enrollment process will start in the early part of May 2004.  Enrollment in the new Medicare-approved discount card program does not mean you have to give up your other discount prescription cards.  You can still use your existing non-Medicare prescription discount cards, if they save you more than the Medicare discount card.

I called several major pharmacies whose pharmacists told me your prescriptions will be checked against each discount card you have on file to make sure you are receiving the lowest price available on your medicines.  Also, be sure to shop around.  Check different pharmacies frequently for the lowest prices, as they change frequently. Have the pharmacist at each store you call check all of your discount cards.

For more information on the Medicare-approved prescription discount cards, you may call Medicare at 1(800) 633-4227 or visit its website at: http://www.medicare.gov.

As the Member Services Coordinator for TREA Senior Citizens League, I invite you to join the RxSavings Plus prescription drug discount card program if you haven’t already done so.  The RxSavings Plus prescription discount card from AdvancePCS is available to all TSCL supporters and their dependents at no charge.  RxSavings Plus saves you an average of 20% off your prescriptions at over 51,000 participating pharmacies nationwide.  You can use the RxSavings Plus drug card any time and save.

TSCL receives no commissions or any other form of compensation through this program.  RxSavings Plus has information about its services on its website, http://www.advancepcs.com.  For enrollment information, call 1 (877) 673-3688.
