Notch Bulletin:How Can I Learn If My Member of Congress Supports Notch Reform And Other TSCL Issues?

I live in Mobile, Alabama and would like to be able to find how my Congressman, Jo Bonner, votes on different things I'm interested in. Is there a web site for that? I would like to know how he votes on TSCL issues. J.K.

Knowledge is power and an informed voter is crucial to a functioning democracy. Its wise to check the voting record of incumbent candidates for the House and Senate. Congressional newsletters, statements for the media, and personal letters that Members of Congress are fond of sending to voters back home are often so vaguely worded that its impossible to tell what they support and how they voted. Fortunately, there are a number of valuable resources that can help you learn the record.

TSCL can answer your questions about a candidates position on issues such as Notch Reform, more fair COLAs, prescription drug importation and others we follow. For those of you with Internet access, check the TSCL web site at www.tscl.org/bills.asp If you were to click on the link to H.R.97, The Notch Fairness Act, for example, you would find that Representative Jo Bonner is a co-sponsor. Seniors without Internet access may call TSCL toll-free at 1-800-333-8725.

Another very convenient resource is project Vote Smart. Vote Smart is an independent, objective non-profit organization that has received praise from The New York Times as one of the most comprehensive campaign information sites on the web. It is located on the web at www.vote-smart.org; seniors without Internet access can call toll-free 1-888-VOTE-SMART. Project Vote Smart supplies information on thousands of candidates as well as elected officials.

If you want to know the progress of Notch Reform or some other key legislation, check the THOMAS web site http://thomas.loc.gov. Named after Thomas Jefferson, this government web site allows you to search the database for legislation and provides links to the status of bills, as well as lists of co-sponsors.

We urge you and all TSCL members and supporters to learn everything you can about the candidates. Go armed with your research to public meetings and ask questions. Finally, make sure your voter registration is up to date, especially if you have recently moved. Be ready to VOTE!
