Like you, many of my constituents believe that Americans born between 1917 and 1926 have not been treated fairly in terms of their Social Security benefits. I share your concern about this disparate treatment, and I am pleased to let you know that I am a cosponsor of H.R. 97, the Notch Fairness Act, which would correct the discrepancy in benefits for Social Security recipients born during the "notch" years. This legislation would offer eligible seniors a choice between receiving additional money in their monthly Social Security benefit checks or a $5,000 lump sum payment that is spread over four years.
The current legislation is now being considered in the House Subcommittee on Social Security. However, I know that "notch" babies like you are experiencing increased health care expenses and general increases in the cost of living that cannot be delayed. The need for the Social Security money that you accrued is, therefore, pressing.
I am committed to ensuring equity for you, and I will continue urging my colleagues to consider this very important issue. It is my hope that more members of Congress will come to agree with me so that we can provide seniors like you with the benefits you deserve.
