Legislative Update: Progress Made on Key Issues But Much Work Remains

By Patty Gaul, Director of Legislative Affairs, TREA Senior Citizens League
As the year and legislative session draw to a close, its again time to review our legislative program and look toward the coming year. During this Holiday season, its also a time to look back and to take special note of our loving families and friends, the smile and helping hand from a stranger that we all need from time to time, and the wonders and beauty that surround us.

In the 108th Congress, we have more widespread support for Notch reform than we have seen in ten years. A COLA fairness bill that garnered 79 cosponsors in the 107th Congress, trumpeted some 115 cosponsors in the 108th. The prescription drug importation issue, which we heralded in both the House and Senate these past two years, was agreed to by a margin of 243-186 in the House. A second measure that would allow seniors safe, affordable medicines by allowing them access through Canada or developed European nations - secured an impressive foothold in the Senate.

Members of Congress are taking note of the issues important to TSCL members. Were working to see that this trend continues in the 109th Congress. Many of our seniors cant afford their medicines. This has to change. Drug importation could be part of the solution. Allowing the government to negotiate lower prices is another avenue.

Social Security is a solemn promise made by the U.S. government to its people. It must be protected, not only to be there for our current seniors but also for seniors grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leaving such a safety net as Social Security vulnerable to the ups and downs of the stock market is not wise. Reducing the rate of increase in seniors cost-of-living adjustments, at a time when Medicare premiums are escalating at such a rapid pace and when other health care spending is mounting, will lead to more and more seniors being forced to choose heating oil or food, medicines or a decent roof over their heads. Yet simply leaving the Social Security trust fund to be raided by Congress and the Administration - leaving only an IOU in its place - is like asking the fox to protect the henhouse.

We will continue fighting for seniors through our advocacy on these and other issues in the 109th Congress. You can tell us what is foremost on your minds by filling out the questionnaire that will appear in the next issue of TSCLs Advisor. Have a safe and joyous Holiday season!
