Illegal Workers — Government Holds `Mountain of Evidence`

TSCL Tells Congress to Stop Amnesty and Totalization

The Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are holding a "mountain of evidence" that could be used to bring enforcement action against illegal immigrants and the firms that employ them. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is asking Congress for access to that data in an effort to crack down on illegal immigration by going after employers who accept counterfeit work documents.

The move comes after immigration authorities set a record for the largest number of workplace arrests in a single day. Authorities raided 40 work sites located in 26 states. Some 1,187 illegal immigrants, as well as seven managers of IFCO Industries, Inc., a Dutch company based in Houston, were rounded up. Homeland Security Department Officials said that an examination of the company’s payroll of 5,800 employees found that just over half of them had Social Security numbers that were invalid, belonged to a dead person or did not match names on file.

As this issue goes to press Congress is expected to consider far ranging immigration legislation. TSCL is opposing so-called "guest worker" immigration amnesty legislation, and a related Social Security Totalization Agreement with Mexico, because of the threat it would pose to Social Security.
