Petition to Congress for a Fair & Accurate Annual Social Security COLA

As a signer of this Nationwide Protest, I am formally lodging a protest regarding the unfair, inaccurate, and inadequate Social Security COLA. I respectfully ask that you support and co-sponsor legislation that will correct the annual Social Security COLA calculation.

If you have already co-sponsored this legislation, you are to be commended. Please now do not only vote for the legislation, but also work to convince your colleagues of the need for their support.

For many years, the federal government has calculated and maintained, but never used, a Senior-specific CPI formula that shows our cost of living rises faster than that of most younger people.

It is unfair that the annual Social Security COLA be calculated using an inappropriate, if not downright inaccurate, index when the correct and appropriate index exists.

At a time when my medical costs are going up, prescription drug costs are rising, and Medigap premiums are dramatically increasing in cost, this correction is essential. We are gravely concerned about the effect that past underpayments of the COLA are having not only on today’s spending power, but also on the future erosion of our spending power.
