Around 5 million taxpayers, most of whom are over the age of sixty-five, rely upon the tax deduction when their out-of-pocket medical costs total more than 10 percent of their annual income. .To date, no government agency has released any complete estimate of the potential cost of illegal earnings to the Social Security Trust Fund.   • Legislative Update For Week Ending December 4 2015

    TSCL agrees with members of the subcommittee and we share their concerns about fraud within the DI program. We feel strongly that the federal government must administer the necessary oversight to ensure that scarce program dollars are being spent properly. The short-term continuing resolution (CR) will provide funding at a .07 trillion rate – up slightly from the current rate of .067 trillion – through April 28, 2017. .There is no simple, direct mechanism for regulators or legislators to control pricing. Our laws, in fact, favor business: Medicare is not allowed to engage in price negotiations for medicines covered by its Part D drug plan. The Food and Drug Administration, which will have to approve the manufacturer's vaccine for use as "safe and effective," is not allowed to consider proposed cost. The panels that recommend approval of new drugs generally have no idea how they will be priced. .At the hearing, Burwell made two key points of interest to TSCL. First, she commented that she fully supports President Obama's proposal to increase means testing within Medicare. TSCL opposes the President's plan since we fear that it could have unintended consequences that would ultimately drive up costs for many of the oldest and poorest seniors. Second, Burwell committed to work with Congress to repeal and replace the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, which has brought instability to the Medicare program for more than a decade. TSCL supports efforts to find a permanent solution, since repealing the SGR will result in higher quality medical care for seniors. .TSCL feels that individuals should not be penalized financially if they are unable to enroll on time due to technical issues with the website, and we enthusiastically support the Delay until Fully Functional Act. Radel in the coming months to help build support for their bill. .In order to correct the wrong done to those born during the Notch years, TSCL believes that some compensation should be provided.
