The poll was conducted prior to the president's announcement of executive action that would allow an estimated 4.9 million unauthorized immigrants to avoid deportation. It asked, "Should President Obama bypass Congress to halt deportations of illegal immigrants?" Only 11 percent of those responding said "yes." … Continued

Congress will then have a chance to respond by passing cost-cutting measures of its own. It would: boost monthly Social Security benefits by 2 percent, improve the adequacy of the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, create a new minimum benefit set at 125 percent of the poverty line, and cut taxes for millions of beneficiaries. To cover the cost of these benefit enhancements and extend the solvency of the Social Security Trust Funds for decades to come, it would also apply the payroll tax to income over 0,000 and gradually increase the payroll tax rate from 6.2 percent to 7.4 percent. .In his speech, President Obama also spoke briefly about a new retirement savings plan that will allow citizens to invest in low-risk Treasury bonds through "myRA" accounts. However, our research shows that seniors are unable to keep up with rising costs – their expenses are rising more than twice as fast as the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment.
