House Ways and Means Committee Promises Due Consideration of Notch Reform!

from Virginia Torsch, TSCL Legislative Director

The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA) and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security, Rep. E. Clay Shaw (R-FL) have promised that Notch Reform will get due consideration when the Committee takes up Social Security reform. This pledge was made in a letter to Notch Reform sponsors, Representatives Ralph Hall (D-TX) and Robert Wexler (D-FL).

This is very good news and the first time that the Committee has agreed to review the Lump Sum proposal. A favorable report by the House Ways and Means Committee will greatly enhance chances of getting Notch legislation enacted this year. The oddly named `Ways and Means` committee must review and approve any legislation that requires spending.

We urge our members and supporters to write, call or email Representatives Thomas and Shaw and thank them for agreeing to give Notch Reform a fair hearing.

Members of the House Ways and Means Committee can be found at the following web site http://waysandmeans.house.gov/memsub.htm if TSCL members want to write them as well.

We encourage you, if your representative is on the committee, to write, email, phone or go see them in person! And continue to do so every week until actual hearings are scheduled. We will continue to monitor the progress of Social Security reform efforts in the House and Senate, and will do our best to ensure we are allowed to testify on any hearings on Social Security this Committee or any other, might convene.
