Congressional Response: Representative Sue Myrick (R-9th, North Carolina) Responds To Your Lockbox Petition
I have always maintained that Social Security is the people's money and the government must leave it alone. I have consistently supported legislation that would protect the Social Security Trust Fund by ensuring that real assets are placed in the trust fund. It would restore the Social Security Trust Fund to the real meaning of the term "trust fund." That is why I co-sponsored and voted to support H.R. 2, the Social Security and Medicare Safeguard of Surpluses Lockbox bill. Today, another problem exists in preserving Social Security. Due to the terrorist attacks last September, Congress has been forced to dip into the social security funds and increase deficit spending to sufficiently finance our military in the war. However, I continue to support decreasing funding of the many "pork projects" that exist in our federal government. Many times, taxpayer money is wasted because "pork" projects are inserted in packages of legislation and they squeak by without being noticed. This is a practice I adamantly oppose, and I'm working hard to encourage my colleagues to end this process.
