Legislative Update: TSCL Leadership Recognized
By Patty Gaul, Director of Legislative Affairs
TREA Senior Citizens League and our Board of Trustees were recently honored. Representative Walter Jones (R-NC) read a statement into the Congressional Record on June 26, 2003, that was a tribute to the leadership of TSCL.
In his statement in the Congressional Record, Representative Jones said, “since Mr. George Smith took over the leadership of the TSCL Board of Trustees, he has brought a seriousness of purpose and a determination to build credibility and respect for the organization.” He went on to say, “ When Mr. Smith one day completes his voluntary stint as Chairman of TSCL Board of Trustees he should be able to say that he has left the organization much better off than he found it. He is to be commended for his vision and his desire to help some of the most worthy and needy of all of our citizens: our senior citizens, including many who served the military and fought for their country.”
Congressman Jones first met TSCL’s Board of Trustees last October at our offices in Alexandria, Virginia. Since 2001, TSCL has been under the leadership of Chairman George Smith, along with Ms. Dottie Holmes, Mr. Fred Athans, Mr. Richard Brogan, George Miles, and, more recently, Mr. Ralph McCutchen. Congressman Jones has been, and continues to be, a supporter of Notch reform, one of TSCL’s current legislative priorities.
In February 2003, Representative Jones reintroduced the Social Security Guarantee Act (SSGA). First introduced in the 107th Congress, the bill would require the Secretary of the Treasury to issue to each recipient of Social Security retirement benefits, a certificate that includes a written guarantee of a fixed monthly benefit plus a guaranteed annual cost-of-living increase. Congressman Jones has said, “promising Social Security benefits is the ‘moral’ equivalent of issuing a U.S. government Treasury bond.” TSCL strongly supports this bill.
We want to thank Congressman Jones for those kind words. It reinforces our belief that the staff and the Board of Trustees of TSCL are doing a great job defending earned benefits for our seniors.
