Notch Fairness Act Reintroduced In Senate
“It is time to put these dollars into the hands of those who earned them. It is time to show our support for Notch Reform.” Those words were spoken by Senate Minority Whip Harry Reid (D-NV) as he recently reintroduced “The Notch Fairness Act,” S.1418. With the reintroduction of “The Notch Fairness Act,” in the Senate, Notch reform has gained new impetus in the 108th Congress. The bill, almost identical to the House version, would allow persons born from 1917 through 1926 a choice of receiving either a Lump-Sum payment over four years totaling $5,000 or an improved monthly benefit.
Said Senator Reid, “Government has an obligation to be fair. Many who have written to me think Congress is waiting for Notch Babies to die rather than honor this debt. My legislation is intended to make good on what this government should have done long ago.”
Known as a consensus builder, Reid, who is a member of the Senate’s Special Aging Committee, is a tireless fighter for Notch Reform. “I sponsored numerous pieces of legislation over the years to address this issue,” he said. “With this legislation, my effort continues.”
TSCL is grateful for Senator Reid’s continued support of Notch Reform, and the legislative staff has been meeting with Members of the Senate to build support for this bill. TSCL members are urged to contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor “The Notch Fairness Act of 2003,” S. 1418.
