Congressional Response: Representative Spencer Bachus (R-6th, AL) Responds To Your Notch Reform Petition

Thank you for contacting me about the "Notch baby" problem, which has affected many seniors for quite some time.  I have always supported efforts to remedy this disparity, and I have done so again in the 108th Congress.

I have agreed to be a co-sponsor of H.R. 97, the Notch Fairness Act of 2003, which would allow workers who reached age 65 between 1981 and 1992 to choose from two options.  The first would be a lump sum payment over 4 years totaling $5,000.  The second option would be an improved benefit computation formula.  It is long past time to correct the inequity in Social Security benefits paid to "Notch" victims.

Frequently, I am reminded about the high medical costs, particularly for prescriptions, that our seniors must pay, and I understand that Social Security is often not adequate to compensate for those needs.  I am working hard in Congress to find a solution to our Social Security problem.  We must find a way to make this system fairer for all beneficiaries, and I will continue to work to achieve this goal.

Thank you again for sharing your views, and I hope that you will call on me again if I can be of assistance to you.

Sincerely,
Spencer Bachus
Member of Congress

January 2004
