Congressional Response: Representative Nita Lowey (D,NY) Responds to Your Lockbox Petition
Thank you for expressing your support for a "lockbox" on the Social Security Trust Fund. I understand your concerns and completely agree that Congress must act to preserve and protect the Social Security system. Protecting seniors' hard-earned benefits has always been one of my highest priorities. Social Security is a contract between our nation and its citizens -- a contract that must be honored. I believe we must maintain the integrity and stability of the Social Security trust fund by agreeing on a bipartisan solution that puts Social Security first. I am worried that the combination of massive tax cuts and new spending commitments will threaten that contract by forcing Congress to raid the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds to pay for education, defense, health care and numerous other funding priorities that are not being adequately budgeted under President Bush's Fiscal Year 2005 proposal. As the baby-boom generation begins to retire, the need for us to have a solvent Trust Fund for both Social Security and Medicare is more important now then ever before. Let me assure you that I will not support legislation that requires Congress to invade the Trust Funds or reduce your Social Security or Medicare benefits. May 2004 | ||||||||
