Congressional Response: Representative Max Sandlin (D-1st, TX) Responds to Your Notch Petition
For most seniors every dollar counts. A change in the Social Security law in the 1970s left seniors born between 1917 and 1926 with lower benefits than other seniors. This disparate treatment must be ended! I believe that all seniors should be treated equally regardless of the date of their birth. I am a co-sponsor of H.R. 97, the Notch Fairness Act. This bill would give individuals born in the “notch years” an option of a $5,000 lump-sum benefit payable over four years or an improved monthly Social Security benefit. As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over Social Security legislation, you may be assured that I will continue to fight for seniors' full, fair benefits.
