Congressional Response: Representative John P. Murtha (D-12th, PA) Responds to Your Totalization Petition

I appreciate your interest in the prospect of granting illegal Mexican immigrants social security benefits. I am adamantly against rewarding anyone for breaking the law.

The U.S. and Mexico have recently entered into a “totalization” agreement concerning Social Security benefits. The U.S. has similar agreements with several countries including Switzerland, Canada and the United Kingdom.

This arrangement is valuable to Americans and foreigners as it combines the total hours worked in both countries in order to meet the necessary qualifications to receive benefits. There are thousands of legal Mexicans that pay into social security but are not eligible. However, as I have stated above, I am against granting illegal immigrants access to our social security. Please be assured that I will be following this situation closely.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or are in need of further assistance. Thank you for your correspondence.

Sincerely,

JOHN P. MURTHA
MEMBER OF CONGRESS

January 2005
