By Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA)
For over half a century, Social Security has fulfilled its mission and America has kept its promise. Today, Social Security is the only source of income for one in five seniors, protecting Americans from falling into poverty. Some of you may remember what America was like before Social Security. Anyone who does remember knows why President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared that Americans would never again be forced to go it alone.
Stronger Together, Safer with Social Security
Social Security is a promise made and a promise that will be kept, but I need your help. I will never waiver in my commitment to Social Security. I will never shirk from my responsibility to strengthen the safety net for every American. Every Democrat believes as I do. It's not about politics; it is about keeping your word. It's about keeping America strong and secure.
For me, this fight is personal. My 95-year old Mom lives on Social Security, and my two-year old granddaughter is going to have Social Security in place, safe and secure, when she grows up. Social Security is not some faceless program. Social Security is us, Americans working together, ensuring a safe and secure future for everyone.
Please, I urge you to get involved. Write your Congressman and Senator and tell them what you think. Raise your voice and make sure it is heard. I am a Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for the Social Security safety net. Write me and I promise that I will enter your comments, whatever they are, into the official record. You can write a letter to me at this address:
