Congressional Response: Senator George Allen (R, VA) Reponds to Your COLA Petition

Thank you for contacting me about the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. I appreciate your input and value the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

As you may know, to compensate for the effects of inflation, Social Security recipients receive a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in January of each year. This is necessary so that seniors are able to keep pace so that they can afford the many costs that surround their daily activities. I firmly believe any reduction to the Social Security COLA will negatively affect individuals who are dependent upon their checks.

As your Senator, I am committed to ensuring that all seniors fairly receive the benefits that our government promised them. I have been a leading proponent in ensuring that government does not rob seniors of their benefits. To that end, I sponsored the Social Security Benefits Tax Relief Act, which would repeal the unfair 1993 income tax increase on Social Security benefits put in place by the Clinton Administration. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughtful comments in mind should any legislation regarding the cost-of-living adjustment to Social Security come to the Senate floor for a vote.

Throughout my career in public service, I have fought to lower the tax burden on senior citizens. During my term as Governor of Virginia, I abolished the State tax on Social Security, and as a member of the House of Representatives, I voted to repeal the Social Security Earnings Test.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. If you would like to receive an e-mail newsletter about my initiatives to improve America, please sign up on my website (http://allen.senate.gov). It is an honor to serve you in the United States Senate, and I look forward to working with you to make Virginia and America a better place to live, learn, work and raise a family.

With warm regards, I remain
Senator George Allen
