70 Ways to Save!

All New Edition Just Released, A TSCL Reader Favorite
By Mary Johnson

Want to learn how I cut costs and saved $5,000 in 2005? And how you can too? You’ll find my personal thrifty secrets and lots more tested ways to save in the all new edition of 70 Ways to Save, TSCL’s most popular publication. Here are just a few of the things you’ll find:

Learn my secrets for cutting down health insurance premiums. Recently my tax advisor called. She was certain there was some sort of mistake on the amount of money that I reported for health insurance premiums. It looked too low! But that was no mistake. I cut my health insurance premiums in half, and saved $1,683 in just one year. Learn how you can cut your premiums too.

Learn how I doubled my homeowners insurance without doubling my budget. Cataclysmic hurricanes, wildfires, mudslides and floods have destroyed or severely damaged countless homes in recent years. What’s worse, most of those homes, like mine, were underinsured. A 2005 survey by Marshall & Swift/Boeckh, a building cost information company in Los Angeles, found that 59% of American homes are underinsured by an average of 22%. I’ll tell you how I doubled my coverage and paid only $27 more.

Learn how to save on prescription drug costs. The following excerpts from 70 Ways to Save can help you cut prescription drugs whether you’re enrolled in a Medicare Part D drug plan, or you still pay out-of-pocket:

* Use mail order. Many drug plans save you money if you use mail order. Some plans offer a three-month supply for only two co-pays instead of three. Even if you have no drug coverage, mail order prescription prices can be lower than local pharmacy prices. Do your homework — it pays to compare.

* Compare prescription drugs on price, effectiveness and safety. Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, has a website to help you identify the most effective and affordable medication to treat your condition at www.crbestbuydrugs.org/. The website has comparisons of drugs from the most widely used categories. Based on price and scientific evidence, the organization chooses a Best Buy Drug in a given category. The information can be downloaded for printing out to take to your doctor for discussion about whether a lower cost drug may be just as effective for you. If you don’t have computer access, check your local library or senior center.
