`Extra Help` Program Can Cut Drug Costs By Thousands. Do You Qualify?

The Medicare Part D “Extra Help” program assists people who have limited income and resources.  For those who qualify, it pays for some, or even all, of the monthly premium, and for a substantial portion of prescription costs.  The amount of extra help a person receives is based on income and resources.  According to the Medicare web site, individuals may qualify if income is less than $14,355 or $19,245 for a married couple living together, and resources are less than $11,500 single persons or $23,000 couples filing jointly.

The government does not include the value of your home, car, and $1,500 in burial expenses in calculating your resources.  To apply or get more information about Extra Help, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit www.socialsecurity.gov.
