Congressional Response: Representative Dale Kildee (D-5th, MI) Responds To Your Lockbox Petition
Thank you for expressing your support for Social Security Lockbox legislation. Because I share your concerns about the Social Security Trust Fund, I voted against the President’s fiscally irresponsible tax cuts because they require the government to use the Social Security Trust Fund to finance other budgetary obligations. Because I feel that the Social Security program is vital for our nation's seniors, it is one of my top priorities to protect it and ensure its future solvency. The Social Security system represents a compact between those who have financed the system with payroll taxes and the federal government. After years of contributing to the well being of this country, our nation's older citizens should be able to expect this much needed income. Regardless of the strength of our economy, we must provide a solid foundation of retirement security on which families can depend. Furthermore, I agree with you about the necessity of separating the Social Security trust fund from the government's budgetary shortfalls. Since Social Security is a completely self financing system, it is wrong to use the trust fund as a means to reduce the overall federal deficit. Please be assured I will continue to closely monitor the various proposals to restructure the Social Security system and will support legislation to safeguard the Social Security Trust Fund.
